Schomberg Demolition Derby Safety Check List (PDF, 45KB)These rules and regulations have been created for the safety of the spectators, as well as drivers, pit crews and officials. Any drivers, pit crews, or persons associated with drivers that do not conform to these rules and regulations may cause entrants to be disqualified with no refund.

(A) SMALL CAR: 1980 and newer – Maximum 4 cylinder; Wheelbase 103″ maximum.
(B) LARGE CAR STRICTLY STOCK: 1980 and newer – V8 or V6; Wheelbase 109″ plus

General Rules And Regulations Relating To All Classes
1. The derby is open to any 1980 and newer front-engine, 2 wheel drive, hard top automobile or station wagon. No trucks, jeeps, hearses, limousines, checkered cabs or carry-alls are permitted. No engine, transmission, gear or wheel modification. No pre-1980 cars will be allowed. VIN’s and vehicle inspections will occur to ensure this. Tampering with VIN’s will result in disqualification.
2. Special heats allowing different auto entries may be run at the discretion of the Derby Committee.
3. Entrants must have a valid Ontario PHOTO Driver’s License at the time of registration and at the time of the derby.
4. Entry fee of $50.00 per driver payable upon arrival at fairgrounds. Only drivers and one pit person, each, are allowed in the pit area. Drivers and pit crew must be a minimum of 18 years of age. Drivers must show valid driver’s license upon arrival.
5. Pit crews are allowed in pit area only, and may not enter the derby area UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, before, during or after any heat or final. Wristbands will be enforced at all times.
6. Any persons in pit or derby area without a pit wristband visibly displayed will be removed. There will be no exception to this rule. Security will be tight.
7. All vehicles must be ready for inspection upon arrival at the grounds. No equipment trucks are allowed in pits until the final round, due to lack of space. This will be strictly enforced.
8. Cars will not be allowed on grounds before 3:00 p.m. All cars must be inspected and passed before the start of the derby. All cars must be ready for inspection by 6:30 p.m. All drivers and pit crew must attend the drivers’ meeting.
9. Derby officials have the right to reject any and all entries at any time. The car can be re-inspected at any time throughout the derby. If your car is disqualified for any reason, you will NOT be given a refund.
Note: Protest procedure: Should a driver believe that another participant is cheating, he/she must approach a Derby official within 15 minutes after the heat or feature. He/she must pay a $50 protest fee. If the protest is found to be valid, the protest fee will be returned. This will be strictly enforced.
10. NO smoking is allowed in derby vehicles at any time. No alcohol, drugs, or offensive language may be used by entrants at any time. No fighting allowed. This rule will be strictly enforced.
11. Assigned numbers must be painted on the roof of the cars, as well as on both front door panels. Numbers must be legible and in contrasting colour to the rest of the car. Numbers must be not less than 1 foot in height and sized accordingly in width. Driver’s door is the ONLY door that must be painted WHITE.
12. No head-on collisions, or hits on the driver’s doors are allowed. Drivers may be disqualified at the discretion of the officials.
13. Drivers must STAY IN THEIR CARS until the heat is declared over, or unless otherwise advised by an official. Helmets and goggles must be KEPT ON until the heat is over.
14. In the event of the last 2 cars, (per heat) being locked together, they will be separated and re-started at the discretion of the officials.
15. If you are one of the last 2 remaining cars, and wish to accept 2nd place, you may do so by indicating this to any official by holding up 2 fingers. The winner of a heat will be the last car to make a valid hit. Official’s discretion.
16. If a driver does not hit another car within 1 minute, they may be disqualified at the judge’s discretion.
17. (a) A driver is allowed to enter one heat only. If he/she finishes first or second, they are qualified for the final heat using the same vehicle. Derby officials, at their discretion, may allow additional placing to move on depending on the number of entries in the final.
(b) Any other vehicle leaving the derby pit, under its own power is eligible for the Second Chance Heat, subject to further safety inspection. Drivers wishing to enter the Second Chance Heat must pay $10.00 to enter. THE WINNER WILL HAVE THE OPTION TO ADVANCE TO THE FINAL.
Safety
18. Stock safety belts, in working order, and full helmets are required. Helmets must be approved by CSA, DOT and/or SNELL. Goggles (safety glasses) must be fastened with a strap, or a face shield must be used.
19. Fire extinguishers must be in close reach of the driver, and must be secured with a proper quick release mechanism. A minimum 2 lb. Type (B or C class) must be used.
20. All air bags must be removed, and air bag sensors must be disabled.
21. Additional safety regulations may be imposed at the time of the Derby to conform to current conditions.
Equipment/Mechanics
22. All glass, except windshield (optional), decorative moldings, and windshield wipers must be removed from cars. Interior of cars must be swept clean of debris, including inside of door panels. Drivers must wear goggles or face shield AT ALL TIMES, regardless of whether windshield is in or out. If windshield is removed, the vehicle must have a minimum of a single steel bar or chain from the cowl to the roof bolted or welded. The “A” or “H” style protection is permissible but the bars must look like the A or H. The cross brace must be in the middle and in no way come in contact with the distributor protector. The horizontal bar must be a maximum 8″ inches from the cowl. If using the “A”, it may be welded or bolted in 3 locations. If using the “H”, it may be welded or bolted in 4 locations and be no more than 36″ inches in width. Driver must not be impaired from exiting through window area of car in case of emergency.
23. No special bumpers, trailer hitches, or reinforcements are allowed. Bumper hitches must be completely removed.
24. No welding of frame seams top or bottom. Rusty or bent frames may be repaired with steel no thicker than factory and no longer than 4″ inches on 2 sides only. Over repaired frames will be considered reinforced and will result in disqualification. Official’s discretion. Any repairs to frames must be revealed at the time of inspection. If ANY welding is found, it will result in immediate disqualification.
25. All doors, tail gates (of station wagons) must be fastened by 9 gauge fencing wire, straps, ½” chains or spot-welded 1″ every 12″ or 6 – 3″ square plates welded on per door. A steel bar may be horizontally bolted or from A-post to B-post to the center of the driver’s door. B-post to B-post is acceptable; cannot reinforce the car. Straps must be tied, not screwed.
26. Hoods must be operable and wired closed in such a way that the wire may be easily cut by officials in case of emergency. No bolts or screws are allowed.
27. Trunk lids must be securely fastened shut by a 9 gauge fencing wire, straps, ½” chains or spot-welded 1″ every 12″ or 6 – 3″ square plates welded. A 12 inch inspection hole must be cut in the top of the trunk lid, if a chain is used, it may not be chained to the frame, and not more than ½” chain may be used.
28. There must be a 12 inch inspection hole cut OVER THE THROTTLE BODY.
29. Fenders may be cut for wheel clearance only. (2 to 2 ½ inches)
30. Suspension must be operable and free of any non-stock equipment.
31. Brakes must be in working order.
32. Only one (1) 12-volt battery allowed. The battery must be moved to a position inside the car and must be placed inside a non-combustible splash-proof enclosed container. The box and the battery must be securely fastened to the floor of the car and covered (i.e. car mats may be used.) Covering must be secured as well.
33. All holes in fire wall must be filled / covered with metal.
34. Use of a Steel marine tank, custom steel fuel tank, or certified racing fuel cell is mandatory. NO PLASTIC TANKS. It must not exceed 5 gallons and must be securely fastened within the car, in a position over or forward of the rear axle. Splash guard (floor mat/fire retardant blanket) must be secured over tank and tank must be totally concealed from the driver. Tank cannot be in the driver’s compartment or in the window area. The original gas tank must be removed. Not more than 3 gallons of gas are permitted. Metal marine tanks are recommended. Gas lines and fittings must be sealed and leak-proof. No tape may be used. This rule will be strictly enforced due to safety and insurance reasons.
35. Rear seats and carpet must be removed.
36. Radiators must remain in stock position. Water only may be used. Any antifreeze or air conditioning fluid must be drained.
37. No liquid in tires, double tires, studs, snow treads, or cut tires. Only non-aggressive, P-rated all-season summer tires are allowed on all four wheels. Maximum tire size is P235 75R-70R-15. Wheel weights must be removed.
38. Vehicles that do not qualify for the Final or the Second Chance Heat will be removed directly from the Fairgrounds to Phil’s Motors (located at Hwy 9 and 27). This is due to a lack of space. Special arrangements to remove vehicles from the grounds may be made prior to the derby at the time of sign in and must be approved by derby officials.
39. Drivers are responsible for removing their vehicle and all debris, tires, and garbage from the Fairgrounds. This will be strictly enforced.
Small Cars
All small cars must follow the General Rules and Regulations, in addition to the following:
N.B. Small cars will not be allowed to compete against large cars at any time
40. Cars may have a maximum wheel base of 103 inches. Maximum engine size is 4 cylinders. A steel bar must be horizontally bolted from A-post to B-post to the center of the driver’s door. B-post to B-post is acceptable; cannot reinforce the car. All other General Rules and Regulations apply.
Mini Vans
All MINIVANS must follow the General Rules and Regulations, in addition to the following:
N.B. MINIVANS will not be allowed to compete against large cars at any time.
41. Windshields must be removed with a centre support bar from roof to dash.
42. Safety support bar from B-pillar to B-pillar, and a vertical support in center of vehicle from roof to floor.
43. A steel bar must be horizontally bolted from A-post to B-post to the center of the driver’s door.
45. For box vans with no side windows, cut outs must allow the driver vision on both sides approximately 18′ by 24′ in non-support area.
Fuel Injection Cars
Any fuel injection cars entered must follow the General Rules and Regulations, in addition to the following:
46. Fuel pumps must be securely mounted to the floor near the fuel tank. Pumps must be in full view for inspection. In-tank pumps are acceptable in accordance with safety regulations.
47. Proper fittings must be used. (For example, flared ends and gear clamps for neoprene lines.) Inspections will be thorough.
48. A kill switch must be mounted on the roof of the car, 6 inches from the driver’s cell at the center of the driver’s door and must be reachable by the driver. A 6 inch diameter orange circle must be painted around the kill switch.
49. A light must be mounted beside the switch (i.e. trunk cab light). When fuel pump is on, the light must be on. When fuel pump is off, the light must be off.
50. Wiring is important and must be as follows: Ignition source (key on, pump on) TO kill switch and light TO pump. When kill switch is off car must shut off immediately.
Large Car Pro Modified
51. No welding of frame seams top or bottom. Rusty or bent frames may be repaired with steel no thicker than factory and no longer than 4 inches on 2 sides only. Over repaired frames will be considered reinforced and will be disqualified. Official’s discretion;
52. BODY PANELS: Metal may be cut from around wheels for clearance. Front & rear quarter panels may be bolted with up to 5 bolts per panel – maximum 3/8″ bolt.
53. BRACING: Outside of car may have a 12″ X 72″ X ¼” max steel plate applied to driver and passenger doors, bolted in 4 locations (with a maximum ½” through bolt) and spot welded 1″ every 12″. Bevel should not exceed 20°. NO “C” CHANNEL OR ANGLE IRON.
54. ROLL BAR: Single roll bar up each doorframe, inside or across outside of the roof. Roll bars going across the roof must be through bolted twice through the roof for driver & spectator safety. This roll bar may be welded or bolted to the frame or rockers. Bars shall not extend past behind driver seat. No rear bracing. An additional bar may be added behind the seat welded or bolted from roll bar to roll bar. Recommend 3″ to 4″ square tubing or pipe.
55. WINDSHIELD SPACE: Must have a minimum of a single steel bar or chain from the cowl to the roof bolted or welded. The “A” or “H” style protection is permissible but the bars must look like the A or H. The cross brace must be in the middle and in no way comes in contact with the distributor protector. The horizontal bar must be a minimum 8″ from cowl. If using the “A” it may be welded or bolted in 3 locations. If using the “H” it may be welded or bolted in 4 locations and be no more than 36″ in width. Driver must not be impaired from exiting through window area of car in the case of an emergency.
56. DASH BAR: Dash bars are allowed. Bars must not touch firewall or windshield/cage.
57. BUMPERS: Only 1980 and newer car bumpers can be used. Front and rear bumper may be swapped, front to rear, rear to front. Front and rear bumper ends may be mashed in so not to catch on other cars or be cut straight off. No sharp ends. Bumper shocks maybe reinforced with tubing or flat bar to help keep bumpers on. Excessive use of material will be asked to be removed. No loading of bumpers. Officials may request a hole be made in bumper for inspection. Bumper layers maybe welded together. NO METAL ADDED. No truck/homemade bumpers.
58. SUSPENSION: Suspension must remain stock (movement must occur). Broken or sagging parts may be replaced. It is recommended that rear coils be wired or welded to differential. No spring blocks or added helpers. Gears may be welded. Steering columns, drive shafts and rear sway arms may be altered but not reinforced. (Ford/Mercury, ’98+, 6 control arms, stock material; pre ’98 – 4 control arms, stock material). Ball joints, tie rods, control arms and steering linkage must remain stock. NO REINFORCING ALLOWED. Trailing arms must be made of trailing arm material – no square tubing material. No truck rear ends. 5 bolt pattern only. Rear end protectors are to be bolted on only.
