Cowboy Mounted Shooting Demonstration

Cowboy mounted shooting demonstrations at Schomberg Fair

Saddle up for one of the most thrilling spectacles at the Schomberg Fair! Cowboy Mounted Shooting brings the spirit of the Old West roaring to life as skilled riders gallop their horses through a course of balloon targets, single-action revolvers in hand. It’s fast, it’s loud, and it’s an absolute crowd favourite — combining horsemanship, marksmanship, and pure showmanship in one unforgettable display.

What Is Cowboy Mounted Shooting?

Cowboy Mounted Shooting (also known as western mounted shooting) is a competitive equestrian sport in which riders navigate a shooting pattern on horseback, firing at balloon targets along the way. The sport draws inspiration from the historical shooting exhibitions performed at Wild West shows in the late 1800s — events that once featured legendary marksmen and women like Annie Oakley.

For safety, modern competitors use blank ammunition specially certified to break a balloon target within twenty feet (6 metres). No live rounds are used. The focus is on speed, accuracy, and the harmony between horse and rider — and the period-authentic Western attire only adds to the excitement.

What to Expect at the Schomberg Fair

When you watch Cowboy Mounted Shooting at the fair, here’s what you’ll see:

  • Riders in full Western regalia — think cowboy hats, boots, vests, and flowing period dresses
  • Beautifully trained horses conditioned to remain steady and responsive amid the noise and action
  • Patterns of balloon targets mounted on cones across the arena, arranged in different configurations for each run
  • Lightning-fast runs as competitors race against the clock, drawing and firing while controlling their mounts at speed
  • Penalties for missed balloons or knocked cones — accuracy matters as much as speed

Every run is scored on a combination of time and accuracy, making each pass through the course a high-stakes performance.

A Family-Friendly Spectacle

Cowboy Mounted Shooting is one of the most accessible and entertaining attractions at the fair. You don’t need to know anything about horses or shooting sports to enjoy it — the action speaks for itself. Kids love the cowboy and cowgirl costumes and the dramatic pop of bursting balloons, while adults appreciate the incredible skill on display.

It’s also a wonderful way to experience a piece of living history right here in Schomberg, with riders carrying on traditions that go back more than a century.

When & Where

Cowboy Mounted Shooting demonstrations and competitions will take place on the fairgrounds during the Schomberg Fair, May 29–31, 2026. Check the full event schedule closer to fair weekend for exact times and arena location.
